Illuminating the World: The Transformative Role of Photonics
Abstract: Photonics, the science of light generation, manipulation, and detection, has become a cornerstone of modern innovation, reshaping industries and enabling new paradigms in science and technology. Light-enabled products and related services—such as cloud computing, streaming, and e-commerce—now account for over 15 percent of the global gross domestic product (GDP), equating to approximately $16 trillion USD in 2023. The global annual revenues from the production of optics and photonics core components reached $368 billion in 2022, reflecting a remarkable 26 percent growth since 2020 and outpacing the global GDP growth of 18 percent during the same period. Additionally, the photonics industry employs over 1.25 million people worldwide, underscoring its economic and societal impact.
As we stand on the threshold of a photonics-driven era, this talk will illuminate the scientific, technological, and economic contributions of photonics, showcasing its vital role in building a brighter, more sustainable future.
